Quantitative Adjectives

QUANTITATIVE ADJECTIVES  Adjectives of quantity tell how much or how many. They have these three subdivisions: How much  Quantity in Bulk: little, much, some, no, any, considerable. Sometimes small is joined to singular nouns to express an indefinite measure of the thing spoken of.  Examples • He parted with much lamenting of the lady. • We began to do our work with great labor and little profit. • I have some knowledge of grammar and language. Examples of small as a Quantitative Adjective • The woman looked at me and walked away with a laugh of small satisfaction. • ‘T’ is midnight, but small thoughts have I of sleep.-Coleridge. • It gives small idea of Coleridge's way of talking.-Carlyle.  When some, any, no, are used with plural nouns, they come under the next division of adjectives. How many Quantity in Number: This may be denoted by numbers or remotely designated by words expressing indefinite amounts. Hence the natural division into- • Definite nu...

Qualitative Adjective

QUALITATIVE ADJECTIVES  In English, these adjectives usually come before the nouns (objects) we intend to describe. e.g.: a nice friend, a blue jacket, an interesting film. Without the use of adjectives, actually, we lose a lot; and we may be short in expressing our emotions, opinions, and the impressions we have about a given subject. Here, we would analyze to what extent the use of adjectives (esp. adjectives of quality) is helpful in our interactive contact with the others. Example • Yesterday, I bought a house. • The sentence seems formal and boring as the speaker is giving a vague idea about the house he had bought. The sentence doesn't carry a complete well-spoken idea. It is needed to make a sentence expressive, attractive and provoking, by relying on adjectives to give colorful strokes to it and present it in a beautiful painting. Now compare the first sentence with the following: • Yesterday, I bought a big house. Here, the adjective big lends some brightness to t...

Demonstrative Adjectives

DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVE  Demonstratives are deictic words that indicate which entities a speaker refers to, and distinguishes those entities from others. Demonstratives are usually employed for spatial dexis (using the context of the physical surroundings), but in many languages they double as discourse deictics, referring not to concrete objects but to words, phrases and propositions mentioned in speech. Demonstrative Adjectives are used to demonstrate or indicate specific things. These are called demonstrative because they show something. They point out nouns. They always answer the question which one? "This", "that", "these" and "those" are all Demonstrative Adjectives. Demonstrative Adjectives come even before adjectives of number. In the following example, Demonstrative Adjectives are underlined. • Let's take this burger and later read that book. Demonstrative Adjectives are identical to the demonstrative pronouns, but are u...
